The library is a forum for all points of view and provides free and equal access to its collection and services.
The River Vale Free Public Library opened on November 20, 1952 as an association library, in a basement classroom in the Roberge School. It was staffed by volunteers and was open four hours a week. The budget for the year was $250, most of which was spent on books.
The Town's first librarian was hired in 1955, and, in 1964, the library was municipalized and moved to the former police headquarters. When it became clear that a larger building was needed, a bond was passed to create the current 8,000 square foot structure, which opened in 1983.
Today the Library is open seven days a week, lends out just under 14 items per capita per year and has a collection of more than 50,000 items, including books, music CDs, videos and DVDs and downloadable books on tape. It hosts more than 400 library and community-sponsored programs a year, and displays art works done by professional artists from the Pascack Valley region.
If you have any questions regarding the renovation please contact Library Director, Ann McCarthy at 201-391-2323.
