Friends the Library

The Friends of the River Vale Library is a volunteer organization of citizens concerned with community support of our library. When you join the Friends, you'll contribute your own special skills and talents, your ability to see what needs to be done and your ideas for accomplishing things that cannot be done without Friends. You can become actively involved, or simply have the satisfaction of monetarily supporting a worthwhile cause through the Friends Annual Membership and Fund Drive (see Fund Drive letter below). The Friends group meets at the library on the 1st Tuesday of each month (except July and August) at 12:00 PM. The Program Committee provides a calendar of activities and programs for the year. For specific information on each of the programs please click on the "Programs" page or call the library at 391-2323 for information. All Friends activities and programs are sponsored by the River Vale Free Public Library.

2007 Friends Membership and Fund Drive Letter

TO OUR DEAR FRIENDS: As the Friends of the River Vale Library begin our 2007 Membership and Fund Drive, we'd like to send a sincere thank you to all the River Vale residents who have been so supportive of our group in the past. Through your generosity, we have been able to successfully meet our stated mission of enhancing and enriching the resources of our Town's library.

The library is a center for community education, entertainment and culture. If you haven't visited the library recently, you may not be aware of some of the services that they offer at no charge to you and your family. The library has high-speed internet access available from seven public computers. This year they have added a wireless "hot spot" connection so that people with laptops can bring them to use in any area of the building - even outside on the back patio! Check out the library's re-designed web site at www.bccls.org/rivervale.

Just to the left of the main circulation desk, you will find a large collection of entertainment DVDs, including many classic dramas and comedies, award-winning newer films and TV show selections. You can also browse through the latest travel books and DVDs and an instructional DVD collection that offers exercise, dance, language, decorating and other helpful information.

In the cheerful, cozy and brightly decorated Children's Room, youngsters will find the latest paperback series, picture books, DVDs and music CDs. In addition to these collections, special children's programming is offered throughout the year for all age groups, including regular Story Times and craft classes.

Near the main desk you will see several high-interest merchandising areas that are used to make it easy for you to find the very latest in fiction, non-fiction and music. You will also see flyers and announcements for all of the current programming that's going on at the library.

The library has an active, volunteer ESL program, which provides one-on one and small group instruction for those needing help with English, GED or reading proficiency. You may see these dedicated folks working at small tables in the back of the adult area at various times of the day.

The library's Community Room exhibits the works of local, professional artists each month. Sunday concerts are held there in the spring, with a stimulating lecture program highlighting fall Sundays.

Feel free to take part in the library's monthly Book Discussion Group, the lively Lunch and Learn programs and the bus trips, all sponsored by the Friends. We encourage you to share your ideas for programs with us by actively participating in our Friends meetings, which are held on the first Tuesday of every month at 12 noon in the library's Community Room.

We hope that you feel as positive as we do about the quality services provided at our local library. And we hope that you will take a few minutes to translate your feelings into actions by making a generous donation to our Membership and Fund Drive. Thank you so very much for your continued support!

Sincerely,

Friends of the River Vale Library
